Grated cheese, whipped up some pancakes and made an herb & garlic dip = 3 uses for a total of 20 over 5 days = 4x a day

Grating cheese - WHY?! Because then you don't get the dodgy preservatives and additives that are in pre-grated cheese. I usually grate about 500g-1kg at a time, and have it in a box in the fridge for use through the week. Today I'm using it for one side of the pancakes, and also for topping the taco pie.

Pancakes... we start with melted butter in ours, so dishes are saved because TMX melts butter first, before we add the other ingredients. It's less mess and minus a ladle, because we can pour straight from the TMX jug into the pan. Win-Win!Mrs Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414229490828494058noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3704421515130295723.post-90695246295793941922014-07-13T07:35:00.001+10:002014-07-13T07:36:43.945+10:00Loving My Winter Sundays!Looks like I may actually be getting back into the habit of blogging again - don't hold your breath though! Let's see :-)

A 'sleep-in' of sorts begins by Sundays now... that's a 6/6.30 rising, instead of 5/5.30... trust me, that's a good thing!

Warm coffee, the wood fire burning, a cooked breakfast (today it's cheese pancakes & sour cream with fresh spring onions), then slow morning of pottering/playing/tidying together as a family before having naps and down time.

Off to fellowship with our church in the afternoon, finishing with dinner together before bring the children home to bed.

It's taken deliberate effort to achieve a day of rest like this, but oh so worth it!

We clean house most weeks on a Friday and at least 2 meals are cooked for our Sunday, before Sunday arrives... today we have soup for lunch and Taco Pie to take for church dinner.

Treasured days, these are :-)Mrs Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414229490828494058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3704421515130295723.post-65669085861852905162014-07-12T19:13:00.002+10:002014-07-12T19:16:01.895+10:00Thermomix Usage #3Friday was 3 different dips... gherkin, tzatziki & herb/garlic... another batch of chocolate balls, and a lemon cheesecake (yum!)... total, 5 uses on Friday = 16 uses over 3 days, which is just over 5 x a day

Saturday... a day off... pan & oven cooked breakfast and then gone for the day - 16 uses over 4 days which is 4 uses per day.

Let's see what Sunday brings!

PS: Psst! Actually, I chopped 3 onions for a casserole on Friday too... and the casserole had a home made BBQ seasoning in it, that had previously been made in bulk, in Thermie :-)
I won't count the BBQ seasoning... but with the onions, lets bump that up to 17 uses over the 4 days. LOVE not having to chop onions by hand!Mrs Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414229490828494058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3704421515130295723.post-81395300950093348672014-07-10T20:43:00.000+10:002014-07-10T20:43:04.143+10:00Thermomix Usage #2Today I chopped 4 jumbo onions...1 at a time for about 1 second each, and chopped 2 zucchini PERFECTLY on about speed 4 for a few seconds... I've been doing them too fast till now which makes the pieces too small AND leaves a couple of chunks not chopped.

What we didn't use it for...chopping a whole bunch of celery for soup... I like sliced celery... and 2kg of carrots for the soup... I prefer them chopped on the chunky grate setting of my old food processor...one of 2 reasons I've held onto it, post TMX...the other reason being citrus juicing!
Bonus...I still didn't chop celery & carrots... hubby did the celery and Nj peeled carrots, them Melinda fed them through the food processor. If I wasn't so fussy, or didn't have the food processor still, TMX would have been just fine!

So let's call today 2 uses, even though the onions were for the equivalent of 4 batches of soup!

11 uses over 2 days...5.5 uses a dayMrs Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414229490828494058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3704421515130295723.post-30025301027068270282014-07-09T11:12:00.001+10:002014-07-10T20:43:24.332+10:00Thermomix UsageEveryone uses their Thermomix a little bit differently, depending on food choices, and family size, mostly. I commented on the weekend that I probably use mine an average of 3 times a day...the reply being "That's 3 meals a day!".
Well, no, sort of, maybe... it all depends on HOW you use it...

So, I thought I'd track my usage for a while, so you can see what OUR experience of this amazing machine is.

Yesterday... I made a loaf of bread. That was it in Thermie for the day

Today... so far... a loaf of bread, 2 batches of chocolate balls, and 2 Jelly slice. 5 uses so far.
I intended adding to that 2 batches of apricot slice, and 2 batches of chocolate date slice. That'll be total of 9 uses in the day. Oh, and tonight... I'm making up a double Taco pie... with the chemical free mexican seasoning mix, made in TMX... so make that 10 uses in the day.

Stick with me... it's a busy week!Mrs Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414229490828494058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3704421515130295723.post-16498331193858544662013-08-05T06:09:00.000+10:002013-08-05T06:09:01.454+10:00Cheese for dinnerThat was just last night, not every night. It was good though! Camembert.

Yep, just Camembert!

Which got me thinking... I hadn't shared my 'avoiding grain' conclusions.
(I've been avoiding grain with varying focus and commenting about it on FB for a week or so from July 23)

so... after 5 days of avoiding grains almost completely, I had a couple of wheat based biscuits... and had stomach pain within 20min. That was fascinating and unexpected. Sugar cravings also kicked in.
Then on the Sunday, I had cous cous for dinner and felt generally 'heavy' for the rest of the evening.
I ditched grain almost completely again and the higher levels of energy returned. Sugar cravings disappeared.
Mid-end of that second week, I had spelt grain in muffins for breakfast and felt okay but sugar cravings kicked back in.
Conclusion: Moving forward with the assumption that modern wheat does not agree with me. Spelt is better but still triggers sugar cravings if a main part of a meal - possibly less so when served with larger volumes of healthy fats ie butter, coconut oil etc

This next week: I'm going to be quite strict for the next 5 days (M-F) and not have grains as a main part of any meal and will adapt our family meals to suit... I need to spend some time planning and making notes of what a bunch of good meals are for this way of eating, especially as hubby is keen to give the no grain thing ago, as soon as I've got my head around higher volumes of food needing to be provided, without the grain!

Those things I'm keeping with. Money has been put aside for chook feed which we buy every 3 months and happens to be next week. Money has also been put aside for Dd's annual birthday shopping trip which is a week away. Sounds like a lot hey! The main thing I want to avoid is buying anything from food/grocery stores that can possibly be avoided. 2-3 times a week we just pop out for 1-2 things which becomes 5-6, and it adds up. At the moment, I don't want it to add up! Must keep my eyes closed to a bargain for the next 12 days!

I know I'm well stocked on toilet paper, tissues, nappies, baby wipes...I am REALLY hoping I've not forgotten anything IMPORTANT!

What about meat - we LOVE meat... it'll have to be whatever is in the freezer! We do have 2kg mince, 1kg cooked chicken meat, 1 whole chicken, half a kilo of beef stir fry, (doing an inventory while I blog... meat had NOT been thought out before this decision!), a couple of kilo's of fish, tins of tuna & salmon, 1 meals of bolognese sauce and 1 meal of lamb stir fry. I REALLY don't want to get to the end of the bolognese sauce. 3 times in 12 days would stop it being a favourite! Hopefully only once!

I'm also keeping 2 lists... one for meals we think of that we'd like to eat but don't have the ingredients on hand for... and the other list, the next shopping list - It's going to be an important restocking one, I think!

And if not, you just found out now!

There is so much to be done. Moving out of a tiny house means packing is going to take quite a bit of effort. There's no space to easily put boxes as they're packed. So packed boxes are in walking space. There's only 2 of them so far. And already it's making everything we need to do in the house, even more difficult and time consuming to accomplish. Once we get a fair chunk of the packing done, we'll have more space, to be able to more easily finish off the rest of it. But that stage... is at least a week away.

So, this morning I've woken with a long to do list and zero motivation. *sigh*

Say a prayer for me, please? For energy and focus?

Very popular, all round.

1kg mince, thoroughly mixed with one jar of tomato pasta bake sauce and 1 cup of rolled oats
Spread to about 1cm thick on a sheet of pastry - to the edges on both sides but leaving about 1.5 inches clear, at the top, and about 2 inches clear at the bottom.
Roll it up, from top to bottom, after wetting the bottom strip with a little egg to help it stick.
Using a VERY sharp knife, and a light hand, cut through the roll with a fast moving saw-like action.
Lay each pinwheel on a baking sheet with a little space in between each. Pinch closed the join in the pastry, to help it to not unravel!
Bake 180C till golden
YUM!

I used 4 sheets of pastry, by the way. And it was enough for 2 meals - Bonus!!

...and these are my sauteed vegies... cooked in tomato passata, a little garlic and a sprinkling of Celtic sea salt. We all love them this way, even though it's a VERY new thing here, still.
I'm finding I can still keep busy in the kitchen, but without heating everything up. It's great!

Cookie dough, to then be frozen in rolls, or even better cut up rolls. The butter and sugar cream BEAUTIFULLY in this heat!

Pizza bases, to then freeze... whip up a batch of dough, shape them into the best shape to maximize oven space, spread them with a lovely layer of tomato paste and freeze. As soon as frozen, double wrap them and put them in the freezer. I'm liking making them to the size of my gallon ziploc bags - super easy to freeze them in!

Soaking & dehydrating grain. Dehydrating anything actually. Just find a nice spot outside to plug in the dehydrator and off you go. We're chopping up 5kg of onions tonight, to dehydrate for future use in casseroles and the like.

Crumble Mix... it only takes a few minutes to whip up crumble mix, for topping fruit crumbles in the cooler months. I like to make up about 2L or so, of it and keep it in a container in the freezer. Makes dessert 'easy as', as soon as this heat goes!

Chilled cheesecake! This warm weather makes the smoooothest cheesecake blend! Bring the cream cheese to room temp before whipping it up, or sit it in the sun as I do, for a couple of hours. The end result is oh soooo smooth. Delish!

What do you do, to make the most of cooking and meal preparations, in the HOT weather?

The 2 hours included supervising 5 children with morning tea and a bottle, as well of all sorts of other things going on. The actual cutting and sewing probably took an hour? Now to put them through the wash to remove all the towelling fluff!

Now the sewing machine is out... and it's hot, so I can't do much else... I think I'll see what else I can sew
Well, mostly lovely. More about that later.

We've arrived back to a week that is going to be HOT HOT HOT. Alllll week *sad sigh*
So, I was up at 4.15 this morning to bake a zucchini slice, before it gets hot in here. Success. Also took advantage of the silence to read a few chapters of Acts. Without interruption!
And then on with the rest of the day.

I want to get caught up on washing by the end of tomorrow. That's all the sheets from all the beds plus all the washing from being away. Plus an extra set of sheets from our bed. Only got one load of washing done last night, once we were back!

And while I'm thinking of it... we'll be needing a new washing machine in the next 12months... Do you have a machine that you LOVE? What is it and what do you like about it?

LOVE our Time Timer. Even more than I expected to. Both of them actually. We have the small (pictured) and the medium sized one, too. That link also takes you to where I ordered ours from, as the US site, doesn't ship to Australia.

Not cheap, by any means. But worth it!

How does it work?

If you look closely at my picture, the '20' has a clear 'button' on it. This is attached to the red area. To set the timer, you put your finger on this button and slide the red area around to the desired time. It then retracts until it disappears. It can either end in silence or two short beeps, to let you know it's done. Enough noise to hear it, but not so loud or ongoing that it would annoy others working nearby.

What do we use ours for?

The small one for computer use & piano practice. It's easy to see, with less than half a glance, an approximate idea of how much time is left. Concentration does not need to be broken to check how much time is left. More piano is happening in each half hour now!

Also with the small one, I'm using it to help our 4yo learn to sit still for periods of time, as needed. He was born with 'ants in his pants' but still needs to develop self control and the skill of being able to sit and be still when needed. Time means nothing to a 4 year old, so him being able to see the block of time left, and it shrinking, works wonders. A couple of practice sessions at home and he's good to go when out and about. I don't get asked every 3 minutes during the sermon at church 'are we done yet?', anymore. I set the timer for 45 minutes and know we'll be easily done by then. Bliss for me, and for those sitting around us. He then knows to just keep waiting and DO one of the things, he's allowed to do.

The BIG one - or medium as the Time Timer company calls it... but it's BIG to us...! The BIG one is used for team work and group times. Everyone cleaning the car? Timer on for 15 minutes where we can all see it and Go! Kids needing to hang washing? Timer where they can see it and GO! Silent time, in the lounge room? Put it where they can see it, and SHH!!

What else you might like to know:

The small one has a protective see through cover - making it ideal for tossing in the handbag, for heading out. It flips around to become the 'stand', and help it balance better, when needed. The medium sized one has two click out legs at the bag to stabilise it - easy to use.

They both take a single AA battery

Low 20's and overcast. Happy me!

The Boys (hubby, Nj & Timothy) are digging in the garden to help get the last of our seedlings in. We're waaay behind as gardening plans fell apart a month or so ago. We've been harvesting tomatoes as of this week and still have silverbeet and spinach on the go from winter. Zucchini have been in a couple of weeks and an additional 6 tomato plants went in about the same time - they were about 30cm high already when they went in. Today we'll be adding lettuce, capsicum, pumpkin (take 2!), parsley (take 2 too), spring onions, basil... and... ah yes, cucumbers.

Melinda and I are busy in the kitchen (I'm having a quick cuppa break while I'm typing). She's currently pulling all the meat of a roast chicken and will then turn it into chicken and corn soup. I've done the dishes, am getting pasta whipped up for lunch and am about to create a mango satay chicken recipe to go in the crockpot for tonight's dinner.

Other kitchen plans for today include making up a couple of Tuna Bakes for the fridge, straining and freezing lamb broth, sorting the fridges to make the menu plan for the next few days. And of course, a few more loads of dishes!

Once the digging is done, I'll go help with the planting of the seedlings and then hubby and I will spend the remainder of the afternoon using the motorised trimmer on all the path edges. Kids will be cleaning out the chook house and freshening the nesting boxes with more hay.

If I've time this evening, I'm going to try and catch up on blog reading from the last month or so. If not tonight, tomorrow arvo :-)
It turns out I'm not the only one to experience this and others were keen to know the answer if I ever found out. It was one of those questions we never expected to have an answer to.

But I have found the answer!

and it works every time :o)

and yeah, I was probably 'over thinking' to come to this point but hey, now that the problem has been solved, maybe it's not 'over thinking', any more???

I'll give you my 'over thinking' process first - much of this happens when I'm washing dishes. I do a LOT of dishes.

-This chaos when we come home from a holiday, doesn't happen. We walk into a spotless house and even when we unload the car, there's not that much craziness.
-When we're gone all day, lots of prep is done for the going out. Packing lunch boxes, nappy bags, shopping lists, things to be returned to another family, fuel in the car, pump up the tyres, wash the fruit, feed the animals... and so on.
-Because of this, much of the usual stuff doesn't get done.
-Neither does the 'when we come home we need....' stuff get done.
-Result... we come back to a house with important stuff not done and unload a car load of stuff into a house that's not ready for it and it takes a couple of days to catch up and recover.

The solution?

Make the 'Margin' bigger.
Get ready to go out for the day, earlier.

Yup, that's it.

Now, when we're to be gone for the day... we spend the day before preparing.

Here's the list of key things to get done THE DAY BEFORE
-Clean the bathroom and toilet
-Clean the kitchen and benches to spotless
-Empty all bins and replace liners
-Prepare a meal to come home to
-Prepare a breakfast for the day you're out... that won't need many dishes. I like zucchini slice. Can be served in napkin and if needed, in the car as we go.
-Have all clothes-washing, washed and drying (or dry, folded and away if you can pull that off!)
-Dining table cleared and wiped down
-As much surface stuff AWAY... as though someone else will be using your house while you're gone. I like to grab a box or basket and gather up all those little things that are in the wrong place. Sort them into the rooms they need to go to, on my now sparkling dining table. Then get the team together and get it put away!
-Floors swept / vacuumed
-Pack anything you can that needs to go with you

Bonus points if you get the next days clothes out for everyone so that there's no "I can't find...s" on the day you'll be gone!

Then on the day you're out... you only have to do the last minute things... make beds, feed animals, get dressed and GO!

Problem solved.

and yes, you CAN do it.

and the more people in your house, the more important it is that you do, do it.

Unless you want growing chaos on your return, of course :o)

(okay, in finding that link above, I've just realised I have a whole bunch of
organising posts that never got 'published' so keep an eye out for
those!)
where it happens and the blog when I have time to sit and think before
posting! Which is not often with new baby Michael in the house!

My new FLYLADY calendar arrived last week after not using one from the start of this year. It was a mistake to not continue on! I'd been using a smaller calendar. A very nice one. But smaller. Too small, it turns out. Much easier when you can see what's going on in life, from a few metres away vs needing to be within 1 metre. It wasn't getting used and we have not been as organised as we would like to have been.

Problem Solved!

A bonus with the Flylady calendar is that it is a 17month calendar - allowing plenty of overlap time... useful for those that are slack in re-ordering or for those that like to plan out the next year in advance. A bit of both for me this time!

Our colour coding is: Blue for Family; Yellow for Kids i.e. Piano, Boys Brigade, Girl's Brigade, Co-Op etc; Green is for Church activities and Pink for other appointments.

I also like the big spaces to plot it out as the day happens. Something in the morning goes at the top of the space. Evening at the bottom. Something all day, goes all over the space and so on.

I won't be making the mistake of trying a different calendar again!!
